Modules
Foundation Year
Foundations of Biology for Bioscience (30 credits)
How do different systems in the body work together to keep us healthy? In this module, you’ll build a solid foundation in human biology and the interconnectedness of our physiological processes. You’ll explore the key biological processes essential for human life and learn about the molecular composition and biological functions of organic molecules, and how cell organelles work together to support these functions. You’ll also gain a basic understanding of the main human physiological systems and how they interact holistically to maintain normal body function.
Foundations of Chemistry for Biosciences (30 credits)
How do chemical principles apply to real-world challenges? In this module, you’ll explore the connections between chemistry and other sciences to understand and tackle everyday issues. You’ll deepen your understanding of the key chemical principles that shape the natural world and learn how the molecular composition and bonding of substances influence their chemical properties and reactivity. You’ll also explore the structure and behaviour of atoms, molecules, and ions, and how they interact in different chemical reactions. This will lead to insights into thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium, and show you how chemistry, alongside other scientific fields, helps solve complex problems.
Foundations of Health and Disease (30 credits)
How does the human body work, and what happens when it doesn’t? In this module, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the body’s systems and the causes of disease. This module offers a comprehensive introduction to human anatomy and physiology, laying the foundation for studying Biomedical Science, Healthcare Science, and Pharmaceutical Science. You’ll explore the basic structure and function of the human body, along with what happens when these processes go wrong. This will help you understand the complex interactions that keep the body functioning and give you an introduction to the pathogenesis of disease.
Foundations of Scientific Study Skills (30 credits)
This module helps you develop essential skills for success at university. You’ll work on academic writing, communication and presentation skills, as well as critical thinking, reading, and writing. These skills will help you become an effective student and set you up for success in your studies. How can you build the skills to succeed at university? In this module, you’ll gain the tools to approach university work with confidence and improve your academic abilities.
Some modules have prerequisites. Read more about what this means in our Help and Advice article.
