Conducting Investigations (40 credits)
In this module, you’ll consider contemporary issues in investigative practice, exploring the role of critical thinking in an investigation and developing an understanding of the investigative mindset. You’ll learn about the advantages of critical thinking as an investigator, the pitfalls of not developing an investigative mindset, and explore strategies to help develop these skills within your own role. You’ll also consider the obstacles and opportunities around investigations that you conduct. The module focuses on the impact of austerity, learning and development, and technology on investigations, enabling you to identify opportunities for change in your current workplace.
Contemporary Issues in Interviewing Victims and Witnesses (40 credits)
This module will allow you explore the current state of witness interviewing in investigations, examining the history and development and the contemporary issues affecting the way interviews are conducted. You’ll consider witness interviewing models and explore the way that witness recall and questioning techniques can impact the quantity and quality of information gathered, from a theoretical and practical basis. The module also explores the validity of written witness accounts and the impact the interviewer can have on the final product.
Contemporary Issues in Interviewing Suspects (40 credits)
In this module, you’ll critically examine the contemporary issues in suspect investigative interviewing, exploring the law and literature around pre-interview briefings and disclosure of evidence. You’ll discover how evidence can best be presented in a strategic manner utilising a structured approach to investigative interviewing and explore how the interviewer’s personal style can have an impact, specifically considering what rapport is, and how it can be developed and applied. You’ll also consider the importance of continuous professional development as an investigator, reflecting on your own experiences in suspect interviewing and developing an action plan to support your improvement.
