Associate Head of School (Pharmaceutical Sciences)

I am a Biochemist and Molecular Biologist specialising in protein engineering and non-coding RNA biology. In 2013, after almost 12 years of being associated with the biopharmaceutical industry, I decided to join the University of Sunderland as a Senior Lecturer in Biopharmaceutical Science. I am now the Associate Head of School (Pharmaceutical Science).

Teaching and supervision

I teach DNA/protein biochemistry, microbiology, and biotechnology on the following courses:

Research interests for potential research students

  • Protein biochemistry and engineering
  • Biotechnology
  • RNA biology
  • Cellular regeneration
  • Embryogenesis

Research

  • Biotherapeutics: We are interested in all aspects of biotherapeutic development, from recombinant proteins to siRNAs and gene therapies.
  • Bioprocessing: The expression and purification steps employed for the manufacture of biotherapeutics require optimisation and development. We are interested in the profiling of these steps through the use of DoE and statistical analysis techniques.
  • Bioinformatics: We employ bioinformatics and molecular modelling in the design and development of new therapeutics.
  • Cheminformatics: The application of computational methods for mining and modelling of chemical datasets is a developing research area for us. We are using publicly available datasets for the identification of established drugs for re-purposing in other therapeutic areas.
  • Regenerative medicine: Through the use of planarian worms we are profiling regenerative pathways with the ultimate goal of being able to develop and test regeneration-modulating biotherapeutics.
