Research

I am leading a Google DNI-funded project which will create an app for researching social media abuse. The Social Media Abuse Research Tool (SMART) will help journalists investigate a range of abuse, threats, and hate speech on Twitter. The project is a collaboration between journalism and computing specialists at the University of Sunderland.

My other research interests involve discrimination in sport and the media. This covers diversity in journalism, racism in the sports media, and football-related hate speech on social media.

I have also researched the state and nature of investigative journalism today, looking at audiences and business models for sustaining this form of public interest media.
